Mushrooms as Medicine: from Helping Treat Cancer to Bees & BioSecurity

People are a part of Earth’s biodiversity. Our species evolved in forests. As part of the ecosystem, we learned to use the planet’s bio dome to our benefit. Now, biodiversity is declining as we use up our natural resources.

Singularity University hosted Paul Stamets, a mycologist who researches benefits of mushrooms as they relate to human health. His studies and those of his peers show that mushrooms have a deep link to how our bodies react to threats by activating our immune system.

We think that (mushrooms) decloak(s) cancers for discovery by the immune system. ( ) Your immune system is activated and your immune cells can discover receptor sites in the stroma of tumors.

Once the immune system knows about the cancer cells, it can act to defeat them. Research appears to show that adding mushroom blends to standard chemotherapy may have benefits in cancer therapy. Not only that, mushrooms appear to combat threats presented by viruses.

Further, indications are that we are entering the 6th Extinction of Biodiversity, with species loss throughout the planet. Stamets shows how mushrooms appear to be vital to survival of bee colonies. As we know, bees are critical to pollination of many plants which we enjoy. Will the de-forestation of the plant lead to our demise?
